First you measure, then you automate

The most expensive mistake in building controls is automating a system you have never actually observed.

The case-study post from earlier this month made the point in a specific context: a 28-storey office tower, six-figure quote to replace the BMS, three months of measurement fixed it for the cost of sensors. The general rule is older than the building.

You cannot write a control loop for a variable you have not logged. You cannot tune a setpoint you have not watched drift. You cannot prove a building is wrong with you if you have never read the building without you.

The order is not optional. Measure first. Then automate. Anyone who proposes the reverse is selling the relay, not the outcome.
