The signal stays on

Why the most interesting smart-retail work in 2026 is the BMS that never lost connection when the fibre went down.

The most interesting smart-retail work in 2026 isn't the cloud dashboards. It's the BMS that never lost connection when the fibre went down.

Dual-path telemetry diagram. Primary WAN uplink marked as failed (red, broken at FIBRE CUT). LoRa fallback marked as active (navy, four LoRa nodes with data packets in transit). Both paths converge into a single BMS telemetry output reading SIGNAL ON.

The operators who know their building kept running during the outage are the ones who get the next contract. Resilience is a brand value, not just an engineering one. The on-prem gateways, the LoRa fallback, the local cache that keeps the telemetry flowing when the WAN drops — none of that is glamorous. All of it is what the client remembers six months later.

Cloud-first was the right answer for 2018. Cloud-only is the wrong answer for retail and CRE in 2026. The buildings that hold their value are the ones that work when nothing else does.
